| The Coach's Corner/ Taking Responsibilty |
|
This is a story of a young man to whom my son is providing lessons. He spends all his spare time playing video games and wonders why despite the excellent instruction my son provides him in his weekly 1⁄2 hour lesson, he isn't seeing results. My son decided to challenge him. " What did you do to be the best baseball player you can be yesterday or the day before?" " I don't know?" "Well you will be able to answer that question next week because from now on you WILL keep a daily journal. Every day you will enter into your journal what you did that day to be the best baseball player that you can be!" He is now individually responsible for his success or failure in baseball. He can't lie to his Journal. If the page is blank, he knows he didn't make any effort to better his game. There are a bunch of drills a kid can do at home to improve his skills and they don't have to take a lot of time. Even if it is raining he can simulate his swing (without a bat) in front of a full length mirror a hundred times. This will help to ingrain perfect swing mechanics into his muscle memory. He then can truthfully write in his Journal "today I worked to be the best baseball player I can be. I am EARNING the right to have success!" The Coach tipsfromthecoach.com ARCHIVES
