The Coach's Corner/The Coaches

Around here no top 18U team holds tryouts. The coaches know who the players are

and call them. The team may be fluid for a long time until you have to set the roster.

We had a panel of pro scouts who told us who could play. We once had a team member

approach us before a game and tell us he had a friend from FL. who was staying with him

for the summer. He could throw 93. I asked the kid if he had cleats and a glove with him.

He said yes and I gave him a uniform and he threw that night. He didn't throw 93 but he

was pretty good. We kept him. We went through 4-stud catchers one yr before we found the

catcher we liked. All 4 played D1. There is nothing so pathetic as a HS player whining because

he didn't get a chance. Coaches on that level are connected to the baseball grapevine. They know

or will find out who the players are. We prided ourselves in finding the diamond in the rough that

no one knew about.

High school players, here is the way it works. Do something and someone will talk about you.

Often players would tell us about teammates or opponents who we should look into. We would

make some calls and if someone gave us the impression they might be good enough, we let them

come in and play and find out. But they had better show something quick or they weren't around

long. By the way a player had better get along with the team or it doesn't matter how good he is

he is gone and that darned sure goes for PITA parents.
