The Coach's Corner/Reincanation

I once went to the mound and asked the pitcher if he believed in reincarnation.

He said no. I said "Well, then its not likely that Babe Ruth has come back in the

uniform of the other team so why are you pitching like each of them is the Babe?

Stop nibbling and make them hit the ball" . Another time on a "Showcase" team I coached,

I had a first round draft pick lefty. I asked him if he had ever thrown the ball so hard

the ump had given him 2 strikes on one pitch. No, he answered. Then you can't strike

out anyone until you get 2 strikes? Is it possible to get anyone out with the first 2 strikes?

Yes, he answered. No its not because you won't let them hit it! All you do is walk people

and strike out people. Everyone on the team hates you because they think all of these

scouts came to see them and you won't let them do anything. I am going to make you

the most popular player on the team. The next time you strike someone out drop the

ball and walk off the mound. You're through. Then explain to the scouts why you are not a

head case! He retired the side on 5 pitches. Getting pitchers to have the proper approach is crucial.

They must understand that their job is to get batters to make outs in as few pitches as possible.
