The Coach's Corner/Leaving Baseball

Why are boys playing lacrosse? At 6/7 most leagues play 'coach pitch'.

The kids have a ball. They hit the ball. They field the ball, sometimes.

Mommy and Daddy think they are so cute in there little uniforms.

They come back the next year and it changes. At 8/9 most leagues

start 'kid pitch' and by the time they hit 11/12 maybe as

many as half the kids that had a ball at 7 have left baseball. What happened?

Most 8 year olds aren't physiologically developed enough to

be able to execute a pitching delivery, so they walk and

hit batters...A LOT. Bobby weighs his options before the

next season and says, " Last year, I was hit by the pitch (it

hurt!) 6 times, Walked 15 times, K'd 10 times, hit into

outs 5 times and had 3 hits.. That wasn't much fun.

I think I'll play something else." Because a league chooses

to start kid pitch at 8/9, a large number of kids

leave the game.
